For our purposes, "Art in the Age of the Marvelous" refers to visual art in 17th-century Europe. Baroque implies a new, dramatic approach to art compositions that often seek to engage a viewer’s emotions. We will consider examples in architecture, painting, and sculpture, which build on and reconsider the inheritance from Renaissance art. Many of the artists are well-known to us; Caravaggio, Bernini, Velasquez, Poussin, Rubens and Rembrandt, and some are part of the re-emergence of women artists, such as Artemesia Gentileschi and Judith Leyster.
