How did the maps of America change, both before and after our independence?  How and when did colonies and territories become states? And who came, and when, and how many, and from where? One overriding theme will be “who exactly is an American?” This course will feature hundreds of maps, presented in chronological order with commentary, and a survey of the peopling of America, from Asia, then Europe and Africa, then North and South America, and Asia again. Ample time will be allotted for questions and discussion. No texts are required; a list of recommended books will be given at the first class.
