Civil War Medicine: Myth and Reality

Via Zoom: Civil War medicine has been described as brutal, barbaric, and butcherly. We will cover some of the major advances in medicine that occurred during the war that are often overlooked by historians. This will include the efforts of William Hammond, Jonathan Letterman, Hunter Holmes McGuire and Jacob DaCosta, to name a few. In the last two sessions, we will talk about the wounding of two officers that had major impacts on the war and its aftermath: Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson and Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain. Finally we will discuss Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, the only woman awarded the Medal of Honor.
