Culture and History of the Basque Region

Held in person at McKimmon Center: This course introduces the rich culture and long history of the Basque region of France and Spain. Basques form the oldest continuous community in Europe, with a unique non-Indo-European language that is distinct from all others. The Basque region occupies a spectacular natural environment where the Pyrenees Mountains meet the Atlantic Ocean. There is a long tradition of seafaring exploration, a deep history of transnational migration, and a widely respected gastronomic reputation. While Basques are an ethnic minority that had to deal with discrimination and repression for a long time, the region has emerged over the last half-century as a center of economic innovation, a hotbed of sustainable tourism, and a place that successfully connects a nostalgia of the past with the modern, cosmopolitan world. This course highlights the political and cultural influences that shaped the Basque region, with a particular focus on the relationship to agriculture, environment, and food.
