Developing Pharmaceutical Drugs and Biologics: Past, Present and Future



Held in person at McKimmon Center: This course will introduce you to the world of pharmaceutical drug/biologic development, from the perspective of two pharmaceutical industry veterans who have decades of clinical development experience. We will discuss the organizations, key players, activities, timelines, and regulations associated with developing a new drug/biologic, using the COVID-19 vaccine development programs. We will delve into the objectives of global clinical drug/biologic development, registration, manufacturing, supply, and marketing, and describe some of the specific hurdles that new drugs/biologics face.  We will also discuss the economics of drug/biologic development, including the cost of research and development, types of funding, collaborations, how drug/biologic prices are determined, the costs of disease treatment, management, and prevention, and the market forces that impact the decisions made by pharmaceutical companies.  In addition, we will discuss the impact of the COVID-19 vaccine development programs on the future of drug/biologic development.
