Discussing Jane Austen’s "Emma"

The title character of this revolutionary novel is unlike any other Austen heroine. She’s rich, used to having her own way, and not entirely likable. We'll explore reasons for the continued popularity of this 1815 classic, and why many scholars consider Emma to be Austen’s masterpiece. Along the way, we'll discuss the novel’s characters and themes, speech and speechlessness, and the debate about Austen’s use of food in the novel. We’ll also examine whether or not scholar Richard Jenkyns is right to say that Mr. Woodhouse is “a selfish, idle parasite,” and Mr. Elton “a mean-spirited creep.” The course will be a mix of lecture and discussion. Note: More than any other Austen novel, Emma was meant to be re-read. Please read Emma again. If this is your first time, then you can watch a film version first, and THEN read the novel.
