The U.S. economy has been hit by several financial crises. This class will discuss the different causes of several of these crises, and the effectiveness of the regulatory responses initiated by them. We will also explore the costs of the crises. Examples to be discussed are the 1907 financial panic, the financial causes of the Great Depression, the savings and loan bankruptcies of the 1980s, the 2008-09 financial crisis, and the financial issues resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.
