Higher, Faster, Stronger, Richer: The Changing Face of the Summer Olympics

From its beginning as an innocent celebration of sport to a big bucks international showcase in the 21st century, the Olympic Games have changed greatly since their revival in 1896. Indeed, from spectacles that sought to further national ambitions to competitions that often mirrored the Cold War to the human triumphs and defeats that leave lasting memories and are central to the athletic experience, the Games have showcased and reflected global developments—on the personal, athletic, political and national levels—of the last 125 years. This course will trace and explore the changes—both physical and philosophical—that have marked that evolution, while also considering the changing role and place of the Olympics in the 21st century global arena.
