History of the Protestant Reformation

The Protestant Reformation is often seen as a major break with the past, and the opening of the modern world.  After an introductory lecture setting the stage for the religious and political state of Europe at the beginning of the sixteenth century, these lectures will examine the continuities and the discontinuities between the Middle Ages and the modern world in the life, theology, and legacy of the major figures of the Protestant traditions: Martin Luther, John Calvin, the “Radical” Reformation and English Reformations, and the response of the Roman Catholic Church in the Counter-Reformation.
