Immortal Beloved: Beethoven’s Life, Loves, and Music



Held in person at McKimmon Center: After Beethoven’s death in 1827, an unsent love letter was discovered dedicated to his “Immortal Beloved” – but who was she?  The 1994 movie Immortal Beloved explores this question and the tumultuous life of the great composer.  As we view scenes from the movie and performances of his music, we will consider life in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries — historical developments, philosophies, the arts, important figures.  We will visit Beethoven country, mostly around Vienna.  All the while, we will absorb ourselves in music of this monumental composer and consider why he and his music continue to be so revered.  Will the mystery be solved?
