Is There Anybody Out There? ABCs of Astrobiology

Held in person at McKimmon Center: With the recent advances in the search for exoplanets and in planetary exploration, we are confronted with the question regarding the existence of life on Earth: is it a singular miracle or is the Earth just one host of life out of billions, and life abounds throughout the universe?  To answer this, the nascent field of Astrobiology has emerged and currently draws from disparate scientific disciplines: astronomy, physics, geology, paleontology, biology, chemistry, sociology, psychology, and anthropology.  In six 90-minute sessions, we will take a measured look at the basics and current state of astrobiology, and in doing so study how life came to exist on Earth, the only data set on life we have, to understand how and where life elsewhere in the universe may exist.
