Lecture -- Introduction to Ranked Choice Voting

Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) has been grabbing headlines recently, and creating lots of buzz, but it is not new. Being able to rank our choices in the order of our preferences is a natural process that we use in everyday life. RCV is a simple upgrade to the way we now vote; it is currently in use in elections in 55 cities, counties, and states across the U.S., and has many benefits beyond voter satisfaction. In this lecture, we will explore the shortcomings of winner-take-all elections, and demonstrate how RCV works. We will review its many benefits to voters, candidates, and political parties of all persuasions, how it reduces political rancor and divisiveness, and what is required to bring RCV to North Carolina.
