Lecture -- The Great Boston Molasses Flood

Held in person at McKimmon Center: The Great War had been over for about two months. The demographics of Boston’s North End were changing. In the midst of that teeming neighborhood sat a huge metal tank. It was filled with 2.3 million gallons of molasses that was to be shipped to New Jersey to be used in the manufacture of munitions – that were no longer needed. On January 15, 1919 that tank exploded, killing 21 people. This lecture will tell the story of how that tank of molasses came to be, why it exploded, and the aftermath of its terrible demise.
