This course will provide an overview of the charter school movement in North Carolina from legislative approval in the 1990s to the current roster of nearly 200 schools today. The class will review the "early years" when charters were capped at 100 schools statewide to current debates about whether charters are serving their original purpose. The presenter was involved in covering charter school legislation in the 1990s as a reporter and either worked with or followed charter schools for the remainder of his career.
