This course will examine Russia’s experience with different forms of government throughout various moments in history, in particular the Russian Empire, the Soviet Union, and post-Soviet Russia. It will pay particular attention to Russia’s complicated relationship with democracy, as both an ideal and a reality, in the realm of politics, society, and culture. Based on this historical analysis, we will hope to shed light on Russia’s future in the European and global political order.
