Shroud Of Turin: Icon or Relic?

Held in person at McKimmon Center: Within a Cathedral in Turin, Italy, is an extraordinary, centuries-old linen cloth, which contains the image of a man who has been beaten, scourged and crucified. It can be documented back to the year 1354, but many believe that it is much older and that it is the actual burial cloth of Jesus of Nazareth, a claim that has been highly contested by others. Despite the fact that it is probably the most intensely studied archeological artifact of all time, the controversy continues. What have all these studies revealed? Is the Shroud an icon (an artistic representation) or a relic (an actual remnant) of the death and resurrection of Jesus? In this course we’ll cover the history, science and religious significance of the Shroud, including the leading hypotheses, both for and against, the Shroud’s authenticity.
