Spotlighting African American Female 21st Century Playwrights



We will study the works of four highly acclaimed, 21st century African American female playwrights: Dominique Morriseau, Suzan-Lori Parks, Lynn Nottage, and Jackie Sibblies Drury. The goal of this course is to understand the playwrights literary styles, themes and the issues portrayed and to discuss their relevance to present day. Works of visual artists and poets will enhance your understanding. This class invites participation in discussion and familiarity with the provided summary scene and script PDFs. We will conclude by discussing regional events and sources where you may continue to experience the works of contemporary and classic African American playwrights, including the National Black Theatre Festival, held biennially in Winston Salem, Triangle Friends of African American Culture’s website and events, and locally scheduled Triangle productions.
