Study Trip -- Fall Foliage Hike at Raven Rock State Park

Escape into nature as we hike the trails at Raven Rock State Park along the Cape Fear River. The hike will be led by OLLI Member and J.C. Raulston Arboretum volunteer, Charlie Kidder. Along the moderate trail, we will see numerous features including the Fish Traps rapids, as well as the star attraction, the massive Raven Rock itself. There will be stops to rest, refresh, and take in the views along the way, and Charlie will help us identify the trees and plants we encounter. There is a set of 108 steps on the trail but these can be avoided if necessary. At the end of the hike, we will eat our bag lunches in the covered picnic shelter. There will be time to browse the exhibits in the visitor center, which provides information about the local history, geology, and ecology. Restrooms are available.

Notes: Wear comfortable, closed-toe walking shoes and dress for the weather on the day. Take a walking cane or poles if you use them and snacks and a refillable beverage bottle to keep you hydrated throughout the day. Expect to walk on uneven ground and unpaved, but well-maintained trails. Participants will be required to comply with all NC State University COVID-19 directives in place at the time of this study trip. Details will be provided via email nearer the date. If you find yourself unable to participate in this trip, please contact the office; no substitutions are possible.
