Between the first and eighth centuries BCE, Greece was home to a rebirth of art practices after approximately 400 years of an artistic “Dark Age.”  Gradually, Naturalism was identified as an artistic goal, and the human figure was emphasized as the primary target of the developing understanding of this term. Geometric proportionality was an important factor across the arts; for example, Greek architectural “orders” were likened to human proportions, Doric was male, and Ionic was female.  Elements of composition that we still use today were explored and developed by Greek artists, such as space, balance, symmetry and movement.
