The Once and Future Ocean

This course will investigate what is known about North Carolina’s ocean – its past, present and future.  There will be a strong focus on how things are changing, and what that means for people and nature together.  It will finish with new ideas about large-scale interventions, and hopeful visions of the future, climate change notwithstanding. The course will start with the geologic origins, its changes and uses since that time. Next, we will explore the relationship of our ocean with the Atlantic and the world’s oceans. We will conclude with a discussion of the prospects for the global ocean, efforts to improve the ocean ecosystem, and how to safely harness the ocean for clean energy and carbon sequestration.
