History of Animal Behavior

Beyond anecdote and feelings, how do we access minds and actions that are so different from our own? The Darwinian revolution changed the landscape of how we think about animal behavior. In this course, we’re going to look at the ensuing history of how scientists have studied emotion, instinct, learning, problem-solving, and consciousness – that vexed problem of what’s inside the head of another species. We’ll wind together the ideas and the scientists working in field and lab, into a rich story of coming to understand how and why animals behave as they do.
