Antebellum North Carolina

Held in person at McKimmon Center: This course will explore the history of North Carolina from 1800 to 1860. In that period, North Carolina awakened from its slumbers as “The Rip Van Winkle State” and emerged into a new era of political, economic, and social development. Topics to be discussed include the composition and day-to-day life of the population, the state’s response to nineteenth-century technology, the nature and controversy of slavery, and the sectional dispute that ultimately led to the crisis of secession and the American Civil War.
