Eclecticism and Innovation in Roman Art

Held in person at McKimmon Center: On one hand, the Romans were like us; they collected (looted) art of other cultures and displayed it as décor. On the other hand, they were innovators, not content to sit still, especially in architecture.  They were relentless makers of art that expressed contemporary political messages.  Due to their successful political expansion, the art they created formed the basis for centuries of what we now term “Western Art.”  As various forms of colonialism are being called into question in the 21st Century, this heritage is likely to be at least partially re-evaluated.
