Held in person at McKimmon Center: Science fiction’s Golden Age is usually defined as 1938-1959. We will explore how the rise of magazines, the establishment of a sci fi fan base, the accessibility of the literature to the general public, and the stretching of thematic boundaries all contributed to the foundations and sub-genres of sci fi as we know it today. We will also explore the early works of the giants, some of whom are well-known today, such as Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke, as well as lesser known writers, such as Theodore Sturgeon, Damon Knight, Judith Merrill, and others. There will be a short reading list before each session, so we can have a shared experience with samples of the literature.
