Lecture -- Jazz and American Religion

Histories of American religion are incomplete without attending to the role of the arts and human expression. This course will explore the intersection of American religion, in all its varieties, with one of America's most significant musical creations. We will examine the religious beliefs and practices of important jazz musicians, as well as the recurrence of key religious themes (like ritual or cosmology) across a century of jazz music.
