Lava lakes are unique volcanic features; there are fewer than ten worldwide. They provide us with the opportunity to peek directly into the feeding system of the volcano that hosts them, allowing us to learn about its dynamics. Perhaps the most famous lava lake is Kilauea’s, in Hawaii. Extremely long-lived and thoroughly monitored, it briefly disappeared during the 2018 eruption, and suddenly reappeared last year. What did we learn from that? We will explore the history of the lava lake and its significance in volcanology, as well as analyze its most recent activity and speculate about its future.
