Lecture -- Voting in India--the World’s Largest Democracy

Held in person at McKimmon Center: Controversies over technologies and laws of voting have drawn increasing attention in the United States in recent years. This lecture will provide a historical overview of voting India, the world’s largest democracy, where large-scale elections were first introduced in the early 20th century. Today, India’s National Election Commission runs the largest exercise in democratic voting in the world, with over 900 million voters on the rolls for the last general election in 2019. But, as the lecture will show, laws and technologies of voting relate not just to the efficient and fair conduct of elections, but to underlying conceptions of the meaning of democracy, a focus that we will use to compare the relationship between democracy and voting in India and the United States.
